Terms of Service
Last updated: May 12, 2026
The Short Version
ClayCalc is free to use for any purpose. Our calculators are accurate reference tools, but they are not a substitute for your own measurements, professional advice, or sound kiln practice. Use the results sensibly. We are not responsible for fired clay — you are.
1. Acceptance of Terms
By accessing or using claycalc.com ("ClayCalc", "the Service", "we", "us"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
These terms apply to all visitors and users of ClayCalc. We reserve the right to update them at any time; continued use of the Service constitutes acceptance of any revised terms.
2. The Service
ClayCalc provides free, browser-based calculators for ceramic engineering tasks including clay shrinkage, glaze formulation, kiln firing, slip casting, and studio business calculations.
The Service is provided free of charge and is intended for use by studio potters, ceramics students, hobbyists, and ceramic engineers. No account or payment is required.
We make reasonable efforts to keep the Service available, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted access. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Service at any time without notice.
3. Accuracy Disclaimer
ClayCalc calculators implement established ceramic science formulas — Brongniart's formula, Seger molecular weight calculations, Orton cone temperatures, ASTM C373, and others — to the best of our knowledge and ability. We review formulas carefully and correct errors when they are found.
However, ceramic processes involve real-world variables that no calculator can fully account for: batch-to-batch clay variation, kiln thermal mass, atmospheric conditions, glaze application thickness, firing speed, and more. Calculation results are reference estimates, not guaranteed outcomes.
You must verify any result against your own studio measurements before relying on it for critical work (fitted lids, industrial tolerances, food-safe glazes, structural ceramics). ClayCalc results do not replace professional ceramic engineering advice, materials testing, or kiln operator judgement.
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR ACCURACY.
4. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, ClayCalc and its operators shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of, or inability to use, the Service or any calculation result obtained through the Service.
This includes, without limitation, damage to ceramics or equipment, economic loss from incorrect batch calculations, or any firing outcome based on calculator results.
You use the Service and apply its results entirely at your own risk.
5. Permitted Use
ClayCalc is free to use for personal, educational, and commercial studio purposes without restriction or attribution requirement.
You may not:
- — Use automated scripts, bots, or crawlers to mass-query the calculation API in a manner that places unreasonable load on our servers.
- — Attempt to reverse engineer, copy, or resell the calculation engine as a competing product without permission.
- — Use the Service in any way that violates applicable law or the rights of third parties.
Reasonable, human-paced use of all calculators is always welcome.
6. Intellectual Property
The underlying ceramic formulas implemented by ClayCalc are in the public domain and are not claimed as our intellectual property.

8. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms at any time. We will update the "last updated" date at the top of this page when we do. For significant changes, we may add a notice on the site.
Your continued use of ClayCalc after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms.
9. Governing Law
These Terms shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with applicable law in the jurisdiction where the Service operator is based. Any disputes arising from the use of the Service shall be resolved in accordance with that jurisdiction's legal processes.
If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force.
