What is Clay Moisture Content?

Moisture content is expressed as a percentage of the total wet weight lost to water. At throwing consistency, clay contains roughly 18–22% water. Leather-hard clay is 12–18%, and bone-dry clay is under 1%.

Formula (Measure Mode)

Moisture % = (Wet weight − Dry weight) / Wet weight × 100

Formula (Adjust Mode)

When adjusting to a target moisture, the dry clay mass remains constant:

Dry clay (g) = Wet weight × (1 − current moisture / 100)
Target wet weight = Dry clay / (1 − target moisture / 100)
Water to add/remove = Target wet weight − Current wet weight

How to Measure Accurately

Weigh your sample on a digital scale (0.1g precision). Dry the clay at 110°C in an oven until weight stabilises (usually 2–4 hours depending on thickness). Re-weigh and apply the formula above.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ideal moisture content for throwing clay? expand_more
Most potters throw between 18–22% moisture content (wet basis). Soft clay for hand-building is typically 22–27%. Leather-hard is 12–18%. Bone-dry clay is under 1%.
How do I measure moisture content without a lab? expand_more
Weigh a small sample of clay (wet weight). Dry it completely in an oven at 110°C for several hours. Reweigh (dry weight). Moisture % = (wet − dry) / wet × 100.
Can I recalculate moisture after the clay has dried out? expand_more
Yes. Use the "Adjust" mode. Enter the current wet weight, current moisture %, and target moisture %. The calculator tells you exactly how many grams of water to add — then wedge it in thoroughly.
Why is consistent moisture important? expand_more
Clay at different moisture levels behaves very differently on the wheel or in the mold. Consistent moisture across a batch ensures predictable shrinkage, cracking risk, and forming behavior.
