Calculating Kiln Capacity
This calculator computes the total interior volume of your kiln and estimates usable capacity — the space actually available for ware after accounting for kiln furniture (shelves, posts), necessary clearances, and kiln wash thickness.
Formulas
Round kiln: V = π × r² × h
Box kiln: V = width × depth × height
Usable volume ≈ total volume × 0.70
The 70% usable factor accounts for: 2 × kiln shelf thickness, multiple post sets, 3–5cm wall clearances, and space between pieces for airflow.
Kiln Size Reference
| Studio Type | Typical Volume |
|---|---|
| Home hobby | 10–30L |
| Small studio | 30–80L |
| Production pottery | 80–200L |
| Commercial | 200L+ |
